I Feel Round!
Last Wednesday I woke up feeling particularly round. I spent all day feeling round and just sort of uncomfortable. When I got home, I told Sonny I felt round and he said I looked the same. Then I started to cook dinner and he saw me from the side and said "Oh, now I see."
On Thursday night before our weekly dinner with friends I was getting dressed. Nothing fancy- jeans and a shirt. I tried laying on the bed, sucking it in, hanging upside down - you name it - but the jeans were not going to be buttoned. So I pulled out the 'help.' I have officially started using the belly-band. I have heard women say they popped - I don't think this is it, but it is now pretty evident there's a baby in there.
I haven't felt any obvious movement, but today the nugget is all over the place. There's just a rumbly in the tummy! My friend Nestor said it felt like a roller coaster, and it does!
On Wednesday we find out if it's a confirmed boy or girl. On Thursday I am heading down to Miami for some fundraising visits and will be there until Monday morning...then I'm off to Tampa/Sarasota for some more visits and then finally I'll be back home on Tuesday night. I'm hoping the car ride goes well and that my back doesn't begin to hurt too much. Oh the joys :)

A-OK
Last week was very emotional. Finding out that our baby was at a very high risk for a terminal disease put a lot of strain on Sonny and I. The next day and a half was horrible. We couldn't help but Google Trisomy 18...even though that's probably the worst thing you could ever do. Fortunately I got a call on Thursday morning saying the specialists' office had overnighted an appointment schedule...which happened to be in an hour. I had just gotten to work but quickly gathered my things and raced home to get Sonny.
The drive to the hospital (literally 5mins.) was odd. We both were saying the positive things we each needed to hear but we were also thinking the worse to ourselves. Filling out the paperwork and waiting to see the doctor took no more than 15 mins. but it felt like an eternity.
The ultrasound tech took us to the back and started to gather some pictures of the baby. The doctor came in and reviewed the pictures with us and hightlighted the baby's heart, lungs, stomach, kidney, liver, hands, feet, head, etc... Unfortunately the only appendage I recognized was the head - since it was the big round thing, and the hand - because I could see the little bones. According to the doctor the images looked fine. He thought he could tell the sex and told us that he was 90% certain but that it was still early.
After we were done with the ultrasound we went back into the doctor's office and talked about the results and options. Bottom line was that everything appeared to be fine but that we should come back in 4 weeks to ensure that nothing is wrong. Hearing that was such a relief!
When Sonny and I were in the car heading back he said the kid wouldn't sit still that's why taking the pictures took so long. The first thing he saw when the tech started was the baby staring straight back: two eyes, a nose and a mouth...all in the right places.
I can't express how happy I am to know that nugget is okay. We will know for certain the sex next week! I think it is a girl and Sonny thinks it is a boy. Our family and friends are split. Until next week!

Baby Update
This past weekend I had some blood work done to check several risks for the baby and me. Today I received two calls from the doctor's office and after work called them back. The results had come in.
I tested negative for gestational diabetes and the nugget tested low risk for down syndrome. I did however test as a high risk for trisonomy 18. Not even sure if that is how you spell it. After freaking out a bit I googled the disease. It is closely related to downs but unfortunately most babies don't make it to birth. Most that do die within the first week.I'm trying not to freak out but it is hard.
I am being referred to a genetic counselor who will do more testing and hopefully that will be done sooner rather than later. On a positive note, a lot of people often get false positives on this test so fingers crossed!
Please keep nugget in your thoughts. Good mojo only :)
On another note: happy 28th birthday to me. Thank you to everyone for the lovely wishes.

Four Months and 5 1/2 to Go!
I can't believe that I am already four months! This little nugget will be here before we even know it :)
During the first months of my pregnancy I was hoping for symptoms. At one point I even caught myself saying I would take a bout of morning sickness, just to reassure my mind that the baby was in there. Well, here we are several weeks later and I'm feeling stuff alright!
Earlier this week I felt the baby for the first time. I had read previously that the first signs of motion, called quickening, often feel like gas or hunger pains. So far, they all have been feeling like hunger pains. It makes me happy to finally feel something and to know that the baby is getting bigger, stronger and healthier. The back pain has been coming and going in varying degrees of intensity. Some days it is so bad that going to bed seems to be the only option...but once I'm in bed I have the worst sleep. If it's not waking up every few hours to go to the bathroom, I am waking up because I am in an uncomfortable position. I keep reminding myself that it's all for a good reason and that it's not going to last forever.
Luckily I haven't gained any weight yet, but I am sure it's coming. I do need to start exercising again- at least evening walks...I think I'll start that tomorrow evening. I have also begun to think about the baby's registry and what I need/want. I want to be as minimalistic as possible. I'd love for other moms to tell me what they found to be incredibly helpful and what they thought was a complete was of money.
We currently have a bedroom set in the spare bedroom and I was planning on sanding down the furniture and varnishing it to the color of the crib (yet to purchase), but the more and more I think about it, the more complicated it seems. I may just sell it all and use that money to buy new stuff that already matches.
My co-worker has been fantastic at keeping track of her pregnancy....me not so much. I think I'll keep posts to a monthly update. Here I am at 16 weeks:
